When a cassette player fails, it may begin to destroy the very thing that justifies its own existence – stretching, creasing, twisting and warping the contents of the cassette, binding and choking its own internal workings with magnetic tape. Such failures may become audible as wow and flutter, or as more radical variations in playback speed that ultimately terminate in silence.

Rather than hearing these sounds as a problem, this tape locates them at the centre of the listening experience. To isolate and foreground the sounds produced by the deformation of magnetic tape, I worked with cassette recordings of sine wave tones, which were then played back on a faulty Technics RS-HD350 Stereo Cassette Deck.

Chewed is released on the Start Here audio cassette tape label, which aims to bring discerning listeners the finest in magnetic tape based media archaeological art. The files available for digital download are taken directly from cassette copies, and include the sound of the cassette's leader tape at the beginning and end of each side.

"My neighbors (and their pets) fucking hate me for playing this on the livingroom stereo." - Jacob An Kittenplan, Cassette Gods
